Running Club Responsible For Dropping White Powder
White Powder Drop Marks Trail For Participants Of 'Strategic Sport'

POSTED: 8:56 pm EDT August 23, 2007
UPDATED: 11:23 am EDT August 24, 2007

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- New Haven police have charged two people they believe are responsible for spreading a white powder around the parking lot of the IKEA store and Bank of America in the city's Long Wharf area.

The suspects, 35-year-old Daniel Salchow of New Haven and his sister, 31-year-old Dorothee Salchow of Hamburg, Germany, were arrested and charged with breach of peace in the first degree, a class D felony.

Earlier Thursday, the New Haven Fire Department, New Haven Police Department, State Police, FBI, New Haven Health Department and others responded to a call about a white powder in the parking lot of IKEA. The substance turned out to be flour.

The Salchows said they are part of a running club that participates in a strategic sport called “Hash House Harriers.”

The group said was tradition for members to drop the flour to mark their route. The group also said it stopped dropping the flour post the incidents of Sept. 11, 2001.

The IKEA store is expected to re-open once the fire department completes decontamination of the affected areas, which is precautionary, according to Jessica A. Mayorga, director of communications for the city of New Haven.

"i just talked to the good Dr. Haz-Mat Gonad and he feels/hopes this all works out. He was telling me the story and apparently after they put he and his sister in the police car the police asked where the next mark was. He pointed to it and 2 police cruisers, the fire trucks and a crew of photographers went over put up cones, took pictures, then said "where is the next one. Repeat scene one until about 6 flour marks later when the photographers got bored and disappeared. This apparently got the cops a bit upset. Anyway after he got thrown in jail for about 10 minutes (no sex, private cell) they turned them loose on their own recognizance.
I recommended to the good Dr. that he rent "Alice's Restaurant" to see the great Thanksgiving Town Dump episode and the court appearance that followed. Man, this sounds just that crazy.
By the way, both he and Cocktoberfest are overwhelmed with the support from the hash community.
The military is not punishing Oscar for writing the article. Duty has been extended for most non-civilians in Iraq. Those that know and love Oscar are understandably upset, but baby thats just how it is. Oscar volunteered for military service and we should applaud and commend his sacrifices. His article is very telling and it affected me deeply. It also reinforced for me that our guys are having a tough time of it on the ground and need more help in the form of more manpower (i.e. more troops). Regardless of your opinions on the subject, it is wrong to spread misinformation that portrays the Army as abusive toward its own members who exercise their 1st Amendment rights.

That half marathon was through some great western Pennsylvania shiggy including numerous stream crossings, half a dozen culverts, elevation gains and losses at 500 ft at a time... and of course four beerstops. Whoooo hoooooo. Best of all, it was raining and the temp hovered around 50 degrees all day.
